First thing any page owner must do before they run a contest or giveaway is read me (click on me), this will stop you from breaking any Facebook rules!
It is a myth that you are unable to make entry subject to them liking your page, but it is not a myth that you are unable to make a fan like/share a post or make them post onto your wall as a condition of entry.
5 Tips to Run a FREE Facebook Competition for Small Facebook Pages:
So let me quickly disclose here that this is for smaller pages such as stay at home mums or artists that are just starting up and do not have a marketing budget. If you are bigger brand, want to reach a bigger audience (that can include our above mentioned mums and artists), or want to grow quickly these tips are not really for you. Please comment below though and I can create some tips for you guys as well!
1. Create your Competition using a third party site that has a like gate (this is how you get new fans) – I have 3 FREE options that I use and like:
WooBox: This will take you to an amazing slide show of valuable information in creating a sweepstakes
ShortStack: This site has heaps of amazing tabs that you can create to help your business page.
Fan of the Week: Very basic option! The application basically selects a random fan and posts the winner onto your wall every week based on how the fan has interacted with you page. This is great if you want a re- occurring weekly prize for your fans such as a discount. A lot of pages are now doing this so it has lost some of its charm in my opinion. That being said, I still currently use it!
2. Make sure you run your competition long enough for it to gain entries and for word of mouth to spread. If you do not have many fans (under 2000) than I would run it for a minimum of 3 weeks.
3. Promote the competition on your page every 3 days MAX. The others days you should still be posting about normal things, your fans do not want to hear about the competition every day for the next 3 weeks! Make sure you have a great image and that your message is short and clear with a call to action containing the link to your entry form. Example:

4. Promote your competition on other promotion pages. I have provided a few pages below but there are thousands you can find yourself. Again make sure your post has an image and the same clear message as above. Entry needs to be easy for people.

For example, I am part of a different wedding and small business groups. Interact in the groups. Than in week two and three post that you have a competition going on and promote it, just like above.
If you are a small page your first few competitions may not be as big as your dreamed (considering the number of people on Facebook), but think of a snowball….it gets larger and larger as it rolls along picking up new ‘fans’. My first competition only had a handful of people enter, but their was still a winner and that winner was super excited and told their friends that they won something. Guess what happened, those people all entered the next competition, like I said bit by bit they will get larger. Keep at it.
